creating reports

Postby joe90 » Tue Aug 04, 2009 8:57 am

Can thinking world can generate report at the end of the course? For example if I have completed a course and answered all the given questions in the course, at the end of the course, will it be able to analyze and generate report on all the right and wrong answer or report on the scoring and points given in each question?

Joe - You can definitely create a report that tells the learner how they did in the game, but it's not automatically built for you. That's because, in a 3D game, the decisions and behaviours a player exhibits are often not related to questions - they are related to what's happening in the environment. That said, to create a report, use a variable node for each question or interaction. Then, at the end of the game, use the logic to do the arithmetic on the variables and give the learner feedback on how they performed.

In a recent game that we built, we had on-screen progress bars to indicate to the learner how they were doing in each of the following categories: Expertise, Analysis, Knowledge, and Decision Making. At the end of the game, we tallied each of the categories and gave feedback. For example, if the player amassed 0-50 points in a category, they received "low" feedback that we built in a conversation interaction. If they amassed 51-80 points, they received the "average" feedback. If they got 81-100, they received the "high" feedback.

If you need help building the report using the logic, please let me know!

Happy authoring,

I need help to build the report using the logic
Is it possible to give more information. A copy of the scene flow will be very helpful
4000 students are going to play the game .
Can I do bulk data gaterhering?
I need the info for research purposes.

Thanks

Hi Bettie.

Will the students access the game through a Learning Management System? If so, you want to send the information from the game to the LMS and that will be where you compile your reports.

What pieces of information would you like to gather? Typically, LMSs are only able to report whether the student has completed the course and what the score was on the final test (or overall score) - even though the Think Worlds games can send so much more.

Let me know,

We have a LMS. Do you think that we would be able to setup a report fo 4000 students in one report "graph

Would it be better to do a qualatative case study .

Would it be more suitable for the system to test a 100 students rather than 4000 students.

What would you recommend

Thanks

Hi Bettie-

Most LMSs will run a report for 4000 people. However, since most LMSs only collect data about two aspects of any course (whether the learner has completed the course and what the learner's final score was), you won't be able to tell what the learners thought of the game.

I'd probably take on a mixed methods approach for the research:
1. Run a report for all 4000 learners
2. Find out how many completed the game (quantitative)
3. Using this data, randomly sample/select three groups for interviews: 1. People who have completed the game, 2. people who have not completed the game, 3. People who never started the game
4. Interview members of group 1 and ask them questions about what they thought of the game (qualitative)
5. Interview members of group 2 and ask them questions about why they didn't finish the game (qual)
6. Interview members of group 3 and ask them questions about why they never started the game (qual)

By doing this you don't have to build a ton of logic into the game, you can rely on the LMS to do what it does best, and you get very revealing information from the learners.

How's that sound?

We will not be able to use our LMS for the game.

Will it be possible for the game to write the marks into an excell spreadsheet?

I will be in Europe during November.

Will it be possible to visit Caspian learning.

It is really important for me to know more about the excellent product that you have developed.
I would appreciate it if you can discuss my game and give some pointers in the right direction.

Please let me know as soon as possible. I need to finalise my travel plans

Thanks

Bettie

We are looking into writing data out into a file. I'll post up when I have more info.

We'd be delighted to see you. Please send us the dates you are travelling - email - and we can arrange something

That will be wonderful. I do not have specific dates yet - it will be the during the first or second week in November.

Can you suggest accomodation where I can stay. How long do you think the "consultation/training" will take.

Thanks

Hi there,

I'm looking at creating a report/ score sheet that can be printed and also emailed to a certain member of the team to inform them if the user has completed the inbuilt quiz correctly.

How would i do this and also, how would i input a name onto the final print out to state who scored what etc.

Hope this makes sense and i look forward to your reply.

Regards

Gareth
