DDS Texture settings

Someone has been asking about the NVidia dds Format export (v8.23) and what settings to use.

The red box is the only one you should be concerned with when saving a DDS. You can select the following, depending on what you want to save:

DXT3 – explicit alpha – this saves out any alpha information in your DDS.
DXT1 – no alpha – the best compression to reduce file size, but does not save alpha.

Obviously, you can change the settings and it will affect the quality and output, but we would recommend leaving them alone unless you are an advanced user.

Hey Rob,

I'm having trouble importing any dds file into Thinking Worlds. I'm also using the Nvidia export and I've tried DXT1, DXT3, and sizes from 512x512 to 1024x768. No matter what I choose I get an error telling me that my image must be a power of two even though they are already. Any ideas?

Hi,

When you say importing into TW, I get the impression you mean the authoring tool and not applied to a 3D object. Have you tried saving the file as a png or jpg then importing or using in TW?

DDS are used on the 3D objects (which our MAX exporter automatically converts for you) - however you can do it manually with the settings I described in this topic. The authoring tool itself has an 'image importer' and other 2D functionality, which I believe can use other formats, such as jpg and png.

If you are on about 3D objects, let me know and post an example of the texture you are using. If it's 2D, try jpg/png formats.
