U&I Learning

U&I Learning are well known throughout France, Belgium and Holland for delivering creative eLearning solutions. They are pioneers in rapid development, having built the Atelier technology for rapid development of multi language elearning solutions. In response to client demand in 2009, U&I undertook a strategic review of Serious Games development technologies.

Philippe Delanghe , U&I Sales and Marketing Director - “Many of our clients are now demanding richer learning scenarios and greater student engagement through Immersive Learning Simulations and Serious Games. U&I aim to be one of the leaders in Europe in developing immersive learning Simulations. Thinking Worlds was the clear stand out candidate in the field. Our design team have been able to develop Immersive Learning Simulations after only two days training. The ease of use and power of this tool are fantastic”

Caspian provided two days training to U&I developers and commercial personnel in Paris.  The training covered the technical elements of development; designing effective learning scenarios; and best practice in managing Serious Games projects. In addition, Caspian worked with U&I business development personnel; providing example demo materials, concepts and presentations to support commercial activities.

In their first project using Thinking Worlds, U&I are now developing management training scenarios for a Blue chip French company. U&I are actively involved in concept work with several other well known brands for the development of Serious Games and have become an authorised reseller of the Thinking Worlds technology and support services.

Learnit3D - Games Based Assessment

Learnit3D are using Thinking Worlds to develop formal assessment based scenarios for the Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA).  To our knowledge, this is one of the first times worldwide that games based assessment has been utilised for formal qualification assessment by a recognised national awarding body.

Learnit3D are developing simulated work environments in the retail and health sectors. Students studying for Skills for Work qualifications will be able to practice tasks and challenges used in these jobs within authentic environments. The methodology will also be used for formal assessment as part of the qualification award. Learnit3D are working in collaboration with SQA subject matter experts for the full design, development and implementation of these assessment scenarios.

The scenarios are being developed end to end using Thinking Worlds. The final applications will be output as web playable files to be hosted on the SQA learning portal and accessed via the web browser.  Student scores will be tracked via the LMS> For more information contact Learnit3D MD Andy Macpherson on  andy  (AT) learnit3d.com.

Line Communications

LINE Communications, the leading provider of learning and communications solutions, announces formal inclusion of full 3D simulations into its service offering.

LINE currently offers a complete end-to-end service to its global client base. This includes strategic consultancy, fully bespoke and blended content development, rapid design and development and full implementation/roll-out. It has now enhanced these existing capabilities in the creation of engaging scenario development and technical simulations with the Thinking WorldsTM  3D engine and authoring environment. Having previously worked as a partner with Caspian, who developed the software, LINE has now taken this step as Caspian has evolved  its business to include a licence model arrangement.

Thinking WorldsTM  enables LINE's designers to very quickly create and publish highly immersive 3D simulations. It provides a variety of simulation templates and an open visual authoring environment which allows designers to rapidly create and integrate simulations into their learning projects. Thinking WorldsTM  simulations can be delivered over the internet or through a secure intranet environment and can be SCORM 1.2 conformant, if required.

Piers Lea, LINE's CEO said "Economic conditions remain tough for all businesses and I’m pleased that LINE is still able to invest in expanding its service offering. Thinking WorldsTM  enhances our simulation capabilities by providing a platform to design realistic 3D learning environments within which learners can explore and be challenged. This is an exciting addition to our service and one which has application across a range of subject areas and business sectors if applied thoughtfully. It’s yet another way that we can get business-focussed results for our clients through learning innovation".

Defence Centre of Training Support

The Defence Centre of Training Support (DCTS) based at RAF Halton have developed their own “3D Immersive Learning Simulation” to support teaching Chemical Immediate Action drills.

The DCTS project will be used to demonstrate this type of training method and media, and how rapid the development can be when using existing training objectives. The developed simulation will help deliver a more engaging environment for students to interact, learn and be assessed.

This simulation was created by work placement students and subject matter experts working within DCTS using the rapid 3D simulation engine – Thinking Worlds.

Lt Simon Coles RN, DCTS, said “As a key point of contact for MoD wide advice and consultancy in Learning Technologies, the DCTS TBT R&D group researches and develops key emerging technologies.  Caspian’s Thinking Worlds has enabled us to demonstrate just how quickly trainers without a programming background can take military training content and develop engaging learning and testing simulations.”

The results are effective 3D training and learning simulations created and deployed quickly and easily – all at a fraction of the cost of traditional outsourced options. These simulations can be deployed within secure defence infrastructures and built to be fully SCORM compliant.

Graeme Duncan CEO of Caspian learning said “The work that the DCTS have done is tremendous, they have managed to build their own serious game in a matter of days which solves a learning issue for thousands of recruits. It shows that the Thinking Worlds technology allows us to explore far more rapid, cost effective and user generated development models for 3D simulations.”

Real Projects

Real Projects are e-learning developers based in Norwich specialising in game based learning and custom elearning development. They have established links with 2 computer game degree courses with their innovative partnership with Norwich University College of the Arts (NUCA) being nominated for an award.

In 2009 Real Projects ran a workshop where Computer Degree students were asked to build a game in a day with Thinking Worlds being the development tool. Scott Hewitt said the one-day course was aimed at helping students work to a business brief and to help them manage their time. He says: “They have to come up with a narrative, a creative idea for how it's going to work, what the learning objectives are, who the audience is, the context for the learning game and what learners are going to get from it when it is completed.

Real Projects are using Thinking Worlds to develop a range of skill based learning simulations for the health, energy, education and military sectors. In addition Real Projects is using Thinking Worlds alongside more traditional forms of elearning for its clients.

Scott says – “Working with NUCA and our game designers we’ve been able to develop learning objects in a matter of days. The interface is similar to game engines that our team and the students were already familiar with. We are constantly developing learning objects and games using Thinking Worlds and the reaction from friends, colleagues and clients has been great. In the short time that we have been using the tool it is clear that it offers a great range of possibilities for education and business.”

Real Projects have developed the games without any training support from Caspian. Check out the games:
